Arethusa

Arethusa bulbosa
Family: Orchidaceae (Orchids)
Also Known As: dragons’s mouth, swamp pink

Arethusa is threatened in Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York; endangered in New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and North Carolina; and believed to be extinct in Indiana and Maryland. It grows in bogs, swamps, and wet meadows. These ones brought me up to my waist in stagnant water and pure muck. It was worth it! And fortunately no leaches made it home with me.

Photographed June 23rd, 2014 in the Adirondack Mountains, New York.
