June 22

Well, we’ve got some catching up to do! In the upcoming weeks we’ll be traveling back in time to January where we left off. What have we missed? We begin just a few days ago. Our world has been been transformed. The simple, predictable act of Earth tilting, coupled with millions of years of evolution has made life a true extension of the seasons.

Adirondack Update

Finally, snow all weekend long! And a cold front on the way.

Reminds me of one of my favorites:

“Acadian driftwood,
Gypsy tailwind
They call my home,
The land of snow
Canadian cold front,
Movin’ in
What a way to ride,
Oh what a way to go”

-The Band

An Adirondack Update

Light rain and mist all day yesterday. Snow overnight. Snow showers this morning through the early afternoon. Snow sticking here and there, but no significant accumulation. Waters are still unfrozen.

An Update From Little Pond

The last two days have been remarkably warm. Traces of ice and snow only remain in the coolest and most shaded pockets of the landscape. Where did Winter go?

Adirondack Update

The little snow we had has largely melted. Only the mountains are showing a glint of white. The ground is still soft, unfrozen. Winter is certainly delayed. Abandoned Beaver Pond 2015-12-07 1200pxDecember 7th, 2015

How a True Champion Keeps On Growing

The Blithewood Maple (also known as the All Saint’s Maple) still stands on the Bard College campus after being struck by lightening and possibly torched by vandals. In 1985, the tree was recognized as New York’s champion red maple, but later lost this title after lightening greatly reduced its size. Then, in the spring of 2005, the tree caught on fire “under mysterious circumstances.” Estimated to be around 350 years old, this tenacious tree is still champion in my eyes!
